Virgo Encourages You To Find Your Inner Steward and Inspire Others
Sep 16, 2024Virgo is known as the sign of service to others, work, integrity and health.
You might remember that Virgo shares an axis with Pisces. This is a really lovely axis because it focuses on the connection and balance between matter (Virgo) and spirit (Pisces).
Virgo is a great organizer and taskmaster. The sign is about showing up and the value of practice and presence with detail. While one can find zen from this constant stewardship of life, the flip side of this can be overwhelm that stems from constant care taking.
This Earth sign is embodied, present, logical, rational, practical, analytical, and capable. Virgo is also helpful and stable. The detail-oriented nature of Virgo can also lead the archetype to be critical, but most often this critical lens is focused on itself.
Of all the zodiac signs, I’ve noticed that Virgos are almost always the first to criticize themselves and often offer the criticism that “I’m too much of a perfectionist.” It’s rarely referenced as a badge of honor but as an acknowledgement of a hindrance. That this motivation, or compulsion, for a specific detailed end-result causes distress and keeps them from moving forward.
At the same time, I have a feeling that Virgo may be the most capable archetype to work through karma in this lifetime (and help others do the same). The innate talents of Virgo are suited to deduction, awareness, and care. They are already in tune to self and growth. With Virgo’s ability to hyperfocus, it’s important that when someone has impactful Virgo placements they should take extra care to give themselves grace. Always remember that you are never “less than” and it is important to love yourself as you are.
Virgo may need to try to be open to the idea of not being so rigid with themself or others. Let go of the reins when it makes sense so that you don’t drive yourself crazy or cause yourself unnecessary problems (hypochondria can be common of Virgos). Totally use the Virgo ability to be focused on the details and get things done. The world needs this. Love it about yourself, but also, don’t let it consume you and leave you feeling frustrated with yourself. Your detailed focus is a gift. Wield it with discernment. And also remember that the process that leads to perfection…is knowing that everything is already perfect.
The symbol of Virgo is the Virgin, the one who is unattached and wholly “one in herself.” In Latin, “virgo” means “unmarried” or “self-possessed.” I like to compare the Virgo archetype to its counterpart in Tarot, the Hermit. This card is such a perfect example of how Virgo can apply its self-discipline, reliability, exacting (troubleshooting, flaw-finder), and conscientiousness tendencies. The Hermit, and Virgo, carry the light of wisdom for others to follow.
As you may imagine from these two depictions, Virgos can be somewhat isolated in nature.
When you look at Virgo’s placement in the zodiac wheel you find it after Leo and before Libra. Virgo is a mutable sign, a transitioning archetype. It is the 6th sign of the zodiac and the last of the signs to live in the Northern Hemisphere of the chart (the lower half below the horizon, houses 1-6). This portion of the chart is considered to be the signs that are more personal and subjective. They rule areas of life that have an impact on development of personality and individual identity. While Leo is the archetype of self and creativity, it makes sense to then move into Virgo where adjustments take place. You go through a period of self-refinement in order to better know yourself and your needs before entering into the sign of Libra where balancing self and relationships becomes the lesson and goal. Just like on an airplane, you have to put your mask on first before assisting others.
It’s also helpful to compare Aries to Virgo. The zodiac begins with Aries, the sign of initiation and jumping in head-first. You then travel through the lower half of the chart, learning and maturing in self. This phase completes in Virgo, with discernment, refinement, and paying attention to the details. What works, what doesn’t. Routines and plans are made to move forward optimally.
Another way this transition from the lower portion of the zodiac wheel to the upper (where focus is more on social and public life, including career) expresses itself in Virgo is that the archetype’s tendency towards self-accuracy can create doubt within an individual that they “aren’t ready” to share their gifts that they’ve developed. This can hold the individual back because they are so aware that there is still more work to do. Remember, Virgo is an Earth sign and not the fastest moving type of archetype. Take it easy. Virgo can grow by devoting itself to creating a way of life and routines that help them to do their work and at the same time develop self acceptance. Over time, efforts will pay off. Step by step, Virgo can create its life where it serves an increasingly purposeful and self honoring function. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Take a look at your own chart. Where does Virgo reside? This space represents where you are wired to be an active participant in improving life for yourself and others. It also implies where there is a need for you to apply self-accuracy. Just remember to take it easy on yourself!
