Balance, Beauty, and Relationship. What Do You think? Is Yoga a Libra?

Let's talk about Libra

On Saturday, September 23, 2023 we slid into autumn and spent our first day in the astrological season of Libra. We'll be in Libra until October 23.

To celebrate the season, I created a playlist on Spotify for you to get reacquainted with Libra attributes like commitment, collaboration, romance, idealism, partnership, equality, balance, mutuality, fairness, and give and take.

Did you know...the word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, “night?” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length - balanced.

After the autumnal equinox, days become shorter than nights as the sun rises later each day and night arrives earlier.

Libra (Latin for "balance") is the zodiac sign associated with balance, harmony, and relationship (to self and others).

You can think about Libra as discovering yourself through interaction with others.

Libra learns through relationship, while their polarity partner on the zodiac wheel, Aries, learns by doing.

There are 12 zodiac signs and each represents different aspects of life. They have varied high or low expressions and each exists in polarity to another, opposite its complementary sign on the zodiac wheel.

These polarity signs are a balance for each other and your experience with them exists on a spectrum. You may be stronger in one versus the other, or a mesh of the two with your experience existing at the midpoint. It can change at different points in your life (hello, transits).

It’s important to remember that we all have each of these signs within us. We are not one or the other, we are simply different strengths of some versus others.

While we may be predisposed to a certain way of acting, I think the main goal is actually to work to integrate the opposite and balance ourselves. To become more. More whole. More aware. More evolved. Play with the polarity.

No trait is set in stone. We all have free will. How we deal with our circumstances and relationships will have an impact on how archetypes are expressed in our lives.

For example, Libra energy can become dampened with too much mediating and trying to balance the issues of others or their own wills. Situations like codependency or indecisiveness can be weaknesses of the Libra archetype.

Polarity in Yoga

Kundalini yoga teaches that polarity actually enables movement. Without polarity, you'd be stagnant. You can harness the movement to bring yourself more into balance.

Balance in the Kundalini sense relates to the positive mind, neutral mind (the middle way), and negative mind.

Many people think the goal of yoga is to be in the positive mind. While this sounds great, if that’s all you had, you might do reckless things out of blind faith and optimism. Like running into traffic because you’re sure that the cars will stop for you.

The negative mind is protective and it balances out your positive mind and tries to keep you safe.

Neutral mind is when the negative and positive are in balance. Neither end of the polarity overwhelms you and you can harness the best of both qualities.

Life in so many ways is a teeter-totter. We’re slowly working our way to the middle, finding that point where we can exist in balance (or should I say Libra?).
